Boys vs. Girls Face-Off

It's boys against girls in a Christmas-themed cake build and bake-off.

So, not being one to do things by halves, I decided to make not one but nine christmas cakes! Ok, so they're only little ones but nine seperate cakes all the same.
I started back in October by soaking the fruit in brandy, then in November I made the actual cakes. For the last few weeks thay've been living in a cupboard and being fed brandy every few days.

And here they are, the finished articles. I've already given one to Lydia's teacher. Sadly I only have a rubbish iphone photo of that one, but trust me, it looked fab!

Video Game Classics: Kid Icarus

Kid Icarus is a platforming video game in which the player controls Pit in sprite-rendered two-dimensional landscapes. Pit starts the game with a bow and arrows as his only weapon, and with only the ability to jump. The player explores more areas and collects power-ups that grant Pit special abilities and enhance his armor and weaponry. The gameplay incorporates elements of action and adventure games. Among the power-ups that are included in the game are the Flaming Arrows, which makes the arrows light on fire; the Sacred Bow, which lets the arrows go farther; and the Protective Crystal, which protects Pit from some attacks. There are ways to find the power-ups such as the Black Marketer, in which you can buy them; the Sacred Chamber, in which a god will give Pit stronger arrows; and the Sacred Training Chamber, in which a god will make Pit train in order to receive a weapon. In addition to common enemies, Pit encounters bosses that he needs to defeat to progress. Defeating an ordinary enemy typically yields hearts, which are used as currency, while defeating a boss gives Pit more power. To recover health, Pit must find bottles with water of life in them or go to the Hot Spring Chambe

Tips and Tricks The Solution of Nick Chase Crossword (iPod/iPhone version)

iPhone Game Review: Nick Chase: A Detective Story

Reviewed by JadeDragon

Nick Chase: A Detective Story brings an intriguing real life puzzle solving and hidden object searching game to the iPhone and iPod touch. Like an interactive graphic novel, Nick Chase tells a story of a hard-boiled PI who’s lucky enough to get himself a good paying job, but he must use his detective skills and his knowledge of the crime world to complete the job. The game has a thick film noir style in both graphics and voice dubbing.

Gameplay

Part of graphic novel, part of hidden objects and part of puzzle solving, Nick Chase: A Detective Story is a different kind of game. It breaks the mold of a genre, yet it doesn’t make you feel like a stranger to the gameplay. You follow our PI to track down a clever criminal who has stolen a valuable manuscript penned by Leonardo Di Vince. Along the way, you will need to search clues, break safes, get through unlocked doors and even search computer data, all by using your keen observation, your street smarts and your connections. You will break into a mob guy’s room at night, climb ladder in a dark ally, and search for a family heirloom for a nice dame you are fond of, all in a day’s work.

There are many types of games in the mix including word puzzles, picture puzzles, hidden objects, safe cracking, and more. One nice thing about Nick Chase is that different types of games are all integrated into the story. You never feel they threw in a block memory game just so you can get stuck in the elevator for a little longer. Another interesting aspect of the game is when you go into a new scene the tasks aren’t immediately obvious. Like in real life, when you break into someone’s room in the dark, you don’t always know if there is a safe somewhere or what tools are laying around that you can use to complete the task at hand. The game does a good job at giving you hints in the Task note (the button next to the Menu button), but you often have to figure out how to go about to complete the tasks.

None of the puzzles is that hard, but if you need help there are hints available. Throughout the game, you will see bullets for a six shooter lying around. These are the bullets for clues: collect them, put them in your gun (the right bottom corner), and when you shoot the gun, where the bullet struck shows the clue. But there are certain games in Nick Chase that don’t offer clues, like connecting pipes or road games, word puzzle and many more types of games. Luckily if you can’t solve a puzzle, you can just Skip it, an option in the game. The game is long by iPhone/iPod touch adventure game standards, and it doesn’t get boring with so many different types of games.

Graphics

Nick Chase: A Detective Story has a hand drawn graphic novel style graphics. The scenes are well drawn and sharp. Some scenes are dark which fit the story as Nick moves in the cover of the night. Not many scenes have moving objects, but when they do, the movements are smooth. The game uses touch control, and all graphic pieces response well to your touch.

Sound

Nick Chase has both background music and support for your own iPod music playback during gameplay. The in-game BGM is charming and fits the style of the game. Sound FX is good, but the voice acting is where the game shines. Character voice casting is excellent from Nick, our Humphrey Bogart style PI’s monologue to the butler’s typical accent to the tough-talking policy boss…the scripts were well written and voice acting very convincing.

Conclusion

Nick Chase: A Detective Story is a hard game to peg as any typical genre, but a mix of many types of puzzle and adventure games. If you like solving puzzles and like variety, Nick Chase offers plenty of both. If you are a fan of adventure game/interactive graphic novel games, this game packs solid gameplay and has a good length. For those who simply love a Guy Noir, Mike Hammer or any gritty PI story, Nick Chase will fit in right at home.

The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes Episode Guide 02 Breakout II

Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and Wasp have defeated some of the most dangerous Super Villains on the planet. But when the Super Villain prison system mysteriously shuts down, chaos is unleashed on the world.

Earth's Mightiest Heroes must now band together as the Avengers to protect the planet from the threats that no single Super Hero could face alone.

Their first task is to try and stop Graviton, a being whose power dwarfs anything ever seen. He's after Nick Fury, but will destroy the world to get to him. Individually the heroes have no chance, but together they can make a difference.

This is the second part of the opening two parter. Episode 02 Breakout Part II

Titles Assembled: Hulk, Giant Man, Iron Man, Wasp and Thor.

We start with a flash back to 10 years ago aboard the Shield Heli-Carrier. Fury is talking to Franklin Hall, about continuing the research of Dr Erskine to create more Super Soldiers like Captain America. Then we see Hall in his lab with an experiment going out of control and Fury ordering him to shut it down, but Hall's arrogance wont allow that and he cranks it up even more and then it explodes. Ladies and gentlemen I give you Super Science. Anyway he wakes up with two people in scrubs looking down on him he is confused and wants to know what's going on as his new powers manifest throwing the medical staff against the walls, throwing them quiet hard in fact. Hall figures out that he is able to manipulate gravity, and the first thing he does it want to see Nick Fury. The angry that comes out of the voice doesn't really match the emotion that was animated. Nick Fury being the reasonable man that he is gasses him before he can go any further. Back to Present Day we see Hall just getting out of his cell and wondering how long he has been contained. Zemo tells him longer than he, and he has been here six years. Again he wasnts Fury!

"Bring me the head of Nick Fury!"

That ends the flashback, and we are where we left off last episode with Graviton floating high above the city and just gravity yanked Nick Fury up to join him. He starts crushing him with gravity, we can can actually hear bones snapping. Thor and Wasp step in to rescue Fury. The force of Mjolnir's impact was enough to make Graviton lose concentration and the Raft falls back to his underwater location.

Hank Pym looks on in horror. Graviton recovers to face Thor head on. Thor the even noble warrior gives him a "Your Power is impressive for a Mortal, Stand down and I wont send you home in prices" im paraphrasing but that's the idea. Graviton spouts more Fury Rage, and tells Thor he will use all his power to crush him, Fury and the entire world.

"How did I get here? I really shouldn't drink and fly"

Meanwhile a badly damaged Iron Man, after escaping the Vault crash lands in a corn field somewhere. Handily enough he calls up for replacement armour, The Mark VII from his Chicago armoury. The farmer who own the cornfield drives by with and appropriate bewildered look on his face.

The Pyms confront Fury about what the hell is going on. Fury ignores them and calls an Omega level threat1, which means he everything is under his command now Army, Navy, Air Force even the Boy Scouts. No Fury says is Dr Franklin Hall, Pym of course recognises the name. Fury wont tell what happened to him. Thor continues to throw down with Hall with very little effect. Thor powers up a "This Ends Now" hammer strike and we cut to . . .

"I hope this is a regular location, and doesn't get destroyed"

The Vital Signs Diner where the patron are watching the event on the news. when Hulk barges in with an injured Doc Samson and tells them to take care of him. The we see Banner in human for talking to the Hulk, urging him to help. It turns out this is all in the Hulks head, and to on lookers Hulk is talking to himself, I like its a nice way to get Banner-Hulk interaction. Hulk says he will help but only if he gets to stay the Hulk and not become Banner again.

Thor still having no effect on Hall, Wasp tries to help by flies into the fight. Hall explains to Thor the sheer scope of his power over gravity, and that no one can stop him. With that he increases the gravity around Thor a thousand fold smashing him into the bay. Wasp bravely/Stupidly confront Hall next, he laughs in her face, as many would confronted with a tiny person after smacking down a God! so she shoots him in the face, causing now damage and only angering him even more.

"Janet what are you doing? Seriously he just put down a God! Hank will you talk to her please"

Iron Man arrives on the scene after Jan is swatted away. Iron Man's Armour scans Hall and gets very worried about him. Hall negates and reverses gravity acting on Iron Man sending shooting skyward and out of the atmosphere. After this Pym decides its too late for words, and bigulates himself but even that is not enough to contain him. Fury offers himself to Hall in exchange for him stopping, Hall says he is the ruler of this planet now, and is going to destroy New York to show the world he means business. Starting with Nick Fury, he picks him up again and this time crushes him. But the crushed Fury turns out to be am L.M.D2.

Hall moves onto the city and starts to rip it from its very foundations. Now Thor has finally over come the immense pressure holding him down. This time the fights goes a little better for Thor, whether its because Hall is using so much power to hold up the city or Thor is just pissed remains to be seen. With that the city starts to fall back to Earth and Thor catches it easing it back into its rightful place. With Halls concentration broken the effect in Iron Man ceases to allowing him to rejoin the fight.

"Boo Ya!"

Thor is pounding Hall into the pavement. This time Iron Man, Thor, Giant Man and Wasp are fighting together so its not going to be so easy for Graviton. The offer him a last chance to stand down. Hall angrier than ever rises up saying he is stronger than all off the, then he says "I'm the strongest on there is"3 and faster then you can say trademark infringement, A New Challengers Appears! HULK!

Hulk wastes no time making craters with Hall's face. Thor thinks Hulk is an Orge. Graviton's power are doing little to stop or even hinder the Hulk. All the soon-to-be Avengers are pinned down by Graviton, this makes the Hulk angrier, and the angrier he gets the stronger he is. This gives him the strength to over come Graviton's force holding him down. Pym de-Bigulates to try a new strategy, calling his insect friends to distract Hall, to give Hulk a chance. Its a battle of pure strength now as Hulk tries to stand and Hall tries to keep him down. It's pretty awesome stuff to be quiet honest, I was practically leaping from my chair cheering when I first watched it, it may have elicited strange looks from my wife . . .

"No one infringes my trademarks!"

The strain is getting to Hall, while the Hulk is only getting stronger, so Halls throws an entire islands worth of shipping containers at the Hulk. It is now that Pym's insect best friends arrives at Hall and bites him, breaking his concentration. Seizing the moment Hulk flies at his target, and makes another crater with his face. This allows the other almost-Avengers to get free. Hall lifts Hulk high into the sky and start hitting him with shipping containers again. Pym, Thor and Iron Man begin their assault on Hall to keep him off balance, and Wasp clears way for Hulk to get a clear shot at him. Hulk is shocked at this act of co-operation but is also happy for the help. Hulk hits but its once more flung back.

Hall starts using the very Earth as a weapon. The nearly-Avengers begin a coordinated and unrelenting attack on Hall. Hank Pym does something weird he goes Giant and picks up a boat a throws it at Graviton, now I'm sure that thing has a crew on it, who are most certainly killed when it explodes on Hall's head. oh that Hank Pym and his antics . . .

"Assemble"

The thought of the innocent sailors savagely murdered by Giant Man is enough to break Hall's concentration long enough for Thor to power up a "Lightening III - For Midgard!" attack. That takes out Hall, and a large chunk of New York by the looks of it. Then we don't think about that and have a Heroic Group shot! Pym lectures him about how be put millions of lives at risk (not counting the fifty or so people Hank himself just killed) Thor wants to celebrate (with drinking straws involved somehow I'm sure)

Shield arrives and want the Hulk in custody, his new teams mates say you want the Hulk you go through us to get him. As usual Fury arrives to tell his men to stop acting stupid! He announces that seventy four super villains are now on the loose across the globe. He offers the proto-Avengers a job with shield to round them up.

"See the size of that thing!"

Iron Man partially agrees with Fury, he wants to be a team, just not with Shield in a pretty inspiring speech. Jan offers the name Avengers and no one objects. Clay Quartermain tells fury that Graviton didn't wake up until after the Raft went offline. So whatever caused the breakout to happen, it wasn't him. So who was . . .

Check Your References:
1 Omega level, could be a reference to Omega level mutants, in Marvel its the term given to mutant with the highest potential for power, reality warpers, that kinda thing.
2 LMDs are Life Model Decoys. They are life like robots that shield use as doubles when the need arises, they weren't explicitly named here, but its clear that the Fury robot was an LMD
3 Hulks long time catchphrase is I'm the Strongest one there is"

Wow wasn't that a great start to a season. I have no complaints, really just one observation. Lets talk body counts, I don't think Graviton actually killed anyone directly bar the Fury LMD, unless anyone decided to jump/fall off the edges of his floating islands, everything on them seemed to remain intact. Hank Pym picked up a random cargo boat with looked fully laden so I'm sure was still crewed and just through it at him. Thor when he was bouncing Hall off the busy streets we say a few cars that had to be totally destroyed passengers included, and then the final blast Thor did to knock out Hall, the size of the initial crated was huge, granted when it zoomed in the crated had drastically shrank. So the death toll for this battle is something like this.

Graviton - One robot, and maybe a few indirect accidents due to stupid people falling into giant holes.
Hank Pym - I'm not sure how many people crew a boat that size, fifty is not an unreasonable guess.
Thor - Easily thousands of people in the crater and twenty thirty on the busy street.

I give you our heroes ladies and gentle men

Soul Eater DVD Box Set Review: Part the First

The first volume of “Soul Eater” was quite entertaining and I have to admit that my favorite episodes are the ones that feature the ninja meister “Dark Star”. A young and brash kid who thinks of himself as the best hero out there despite not receiving the attention or respect of his fellow students and those who he tries to save. But overall, each of the characters have been quite fun and it’ll be interesting to see if more characters will be added and what kind of missions that these groups will take on. You can easily tell that the first round of episodes are more or less, character development episodes. They feature a lot of action but it’ll be interesting to see if the episodes will retain its humorous and action-driven flair or will it get more serious.

Overall, “Soul Eater – Part One” was a fun and action-packed anime series which left me wanting more! Definitely an animated series worth checking out!

Maka is a Meister and Soul is her Weapon. As students at the Grim Reaper’s Death Weapon Meister Academy, their study habits couldn’t be more different. But in battle against the supernatural forces of evil, they’re a freakin’ lethal team.

That’s when Soul transforms – literally – into a razor-sharp scythe, and every defeated wicked soul he sucks down makes him more deadly. That’s when Maka unleashes the merciless slayer within, wielding her partner and dropping monsters. Seriously. Monsters. Like the witches, werewolves, and zombies that lurk in the shadows and feed on the souls of the innocent.

Every freakish ghoul Maka and Soul take out strengthens their bond, and fighting alongside their fellow Meister/Weapon classmates, Maka and Soul are the world’s last line of defense against evil.

Soul Eater DVD Box Set One

A sound soul, resides in a sound mind and a sound body was narrated by one of the main characters of the popular Anime series, Soul Eater. The show took Japan by storm as BONES and Square Enix, companies that brought you the popular Full Metal Alchemist and Final Fantasy Saga, bring a unique style of animation, story and characters, different approach to anime. Soul Eater was soon license by FUNimation, who has given America and other English Speaking countries Full Metal Alchemist.

The story revolves around a young female meister, Maka Albarn, and her Human Scythe Weapon, Soul Eater, as they try to recover ninety-nine Kishin souls (evil souls) and a witch soul, to create the Ultimate weapon, Death Scythe. The Grim Reaper (Shinigami-sama) is in charge and founder of the elite school just for meisters and weapons, Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA) (Shibusen). Also, the story revolves around other main leads as well, along with Maka. The arrogant Assassin, Black Star, and his Demon Tool Weapon Partner, Nakatsukasa Tsubaki, as they also complete the their mission of creating a Death Scythe. Last but not least, the Symmetrical-obsessed son of the Grim Reaper himself, Death the Kid. With his two demon twin pistol partners, Elizabeth (Liz) and Patricia (Patti) Thompson, also known as the Thompson Sisters.

Disc One Cover

The First Box Set includes Two Discs containing episodes one through thirteen. The first three episodes are prologue episodes, introducing the three main meisters and their partners. After episode three, they encounter the notorious scientist, Franken Stein, who was said to be the strongest meister to ever graduate DWMA (stated by Lord Death himself). Black Star, Maka and their partners try to stop Sid and Stein as they battle it out against the three-star meister.

Following the Stein arc, Death the Kid asks (forces) his father to enroll him and the Thompson Sisters at his father’s school. At his first day of school, he encounters and engages in a duel with Black Star and Soul, who decided to become partners with them to defeat Kid.

In later episodes, we encounter new antagonists that will be the stepping stone for the next DVD box set presented by FUNimation. The gang meets Witch Medusa (who is an undercover nurse at the academy), her Black Blood Experiment Crona and Ragnorak, the immortal werewolf, Free and a few more witches. Along with them, but not on the same team, Tsubaki confronts her brother and her past as she and Black Star battle it out to stop him from becoming a full-fledge Kishin.

Disc Two Cover

The voice talent, both in English and Japanese, has some powerhouse actors, bringing the characters to life. Kobayashi Yumiko had reprises her role as Black Star from the Drama CD and was the only voice actor from the early Drama CD cast to be casted into the anime adaptation of Soul Eater. The award-winning voice actor Miyano Mamoru voices Death the Kid and Uchiyama Koki voice Soul Eater. Both Miyano and Uchiyama worked on Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts video game series. Maaya Sakumoto also voices the Black Blood Antagonist, Crona.

In the English side of things, Laura Bailey was casted as the lead character, Maka Albarn. The popular and lovable Todd Haberkorn voices Death the Kid and Brittney Karbowski voice her first male role as Black Star. Other powerhouse senior Voice Actors are Vic Mignogna as Maka’s perverted, womanizing father and current strongest Death Scythe, Death Scythe (Spirit). Chuck Hurber as the sadistic Stein, Luci Christian as Witch Medusa and Travis Willingham as the invincible Free.

Both the Japanese and English Cast also has some rookie and first time voice actors make their debut in Soul Eater. Omigawa Chiaki made her debut as the heroic heroine Maka Albarn. Narumi Takahira also made her voice acting debut as the hilarious, over excited Patti Thompson and Uchida Yuuya as Franken Stein.

Micah Solusod is new to the Voice Acting gig, but in Soul Eater he has a major role as he voices Maka Albarn’s cool partner, Soul Eater. Along with Micah, Maxey Whitehead voices Crona, who is also voicing Alphonse Elric in the newly restored anime, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.

Soul Eater Bonus Sticker

The DVD box set part one has special features and bonus material that any anime fan would enjoy. The special features an episode seven commentary in Disc one, with Laura Bailey, Micah Solusod and the ADR director of Soul Eater, Zach Bolton. In Disc two, textless opening and endings and the Late Night Soul Eater Specials (still in original Japanese context). Lastly, every box set includes a bonus collectible sticker.

Soul Eater Part 2 DVD box set is set to release March 30, 2010, including episodes fourteen through twenty-six.

As a fan of the Japanese version of Soul Eater, I just adore having this box set. Having the original Late Night Specials when I wasn’t able to view all thirteen of the specials back in 2008, I was fortunate and happy that I bought the box set and that FUNimation decided to included them in the DVD.

For the English Dub cast, I was doubtful when I heard some of the cast announcements. Some of the voice actors I was familiar with, others I had never heard of until I looked up their roles on Wikipedia. I was somewhat relax when FUNimation gave us a preview of the first three episodes with the respected actor voicing their character. Some did a fantastic job, other actors didn’t do so well.

When I received my copy of the box set, I watched episodes one through thirteen in English, laughing and screaming at the horrific voices. For the last year, I was so used to my favorite Japanese Seiyuu that I didn’t keep my mind open at all when I watched it. However, I didn’t give up on the series. I continue to watch the series and sooner of later I got use to the voices and started to like the English roles.

Actors I would like to acknowledge their acting in this beloved series are Todd Haberkorn as Death the Kid. As much as I love Miyano Mamoru as Kid, I thought his voice was too low for the part, but both Todd and Mamoru did a magnificent acting job at this dynamic character. Todd’s voice range for the spoiled rich son of the Grim Reaper was simply perfect. Todd’s performance was way beyond from what I expected and he definitely out did himself in this role.

Micah Solusod is another I would like to acknowledge, having only a few roles so far in his career has made a new stepping stone for himself as Soul Eater. Playing the cool guy, Micah really nailed the part and has definitely brought cool factor in Soul. However, Micah does sound similar to Johnny Yong Boush (Kurosaki Ichigo from Bleach), confusing many viewers out there.

Vic Mignogna was one of the actors I had my doubts on. He is famous for his role as Edward Elric in Full Metal Alchemist. He is a very good actor, but having the image of Edward Elric screaming for Maka was very odd to see. However, when the dub release the first episode, my worries about Vic voicing one of my favorite characters dissipated.

It took me awhile to accept it, but Brittney Karbowski as Black Star was one of the actresses I thought FUNimation made a mistake on. Not myself, but other fans didn’t like her voice. Acting wise, she’s perfect, but the tone of her voice was way too feminine that Black Star’s partner, Tsubaki, had a deeper voice (voiced by Monica Riel). However, after watching the dub a few times, I started to like Brittney as Black Star. It was hard to adjust from Yumiko as Black Star, since Black Star is my favorite character in the series, but I learned to like Brittney and I could not think of another actress who could voice my overzealous character.

Overall, I had mix feelings about the English release. I was skeptical about some of the voice talent, but I overcome that sooner or later. The special features were a bit lacking, for as I am a fan of English Cast Outtakes (Ouran High School Host Club outtakes are great!), which I was hoping for, but unfortunately it wasn’t available for this box set and the next box set coming out on March 30th.

Framing Hanley: A Promise to Burn Review

May 25th, 2010, Tennessee rock band, Framing Hanley, released their second album, A Promise to Burn.

It’s been three years since they came out with their first album, The Moment, later was re-released in 2008 including a bonus cover track of, Lollipop, originally performed by Lil’ Wayne. That cover song was what brought Framing Hanley into the international spotlight and soon were acknowledged by the other songs on the album, like Hear Me Now and Built for Sin.

Their new album was indeed another hit, gaining new fans with their unique new sound. It may appear to be different from their previous album, but they still have the essence of what Framing Hanley had in the previous album. Songs like You Stupid Girl and Photographs and Gasoline has a little of The Moment that most of their fans really love.

A part from having similarities to their previous album, they had some differences that gained new fans, and probably lost a few. They add a few techno-style sounds to some of their songs and have a little more of a retro-alternative rock style going, different from their previous album, which was incredibly raw and refreshing with the new transition of what rock and alternative had become in previous years.

ut why tack on a near two-minute outro to that same song? The song climaxes perfectly with an echoed line upon being ‘finished’ but is them dragged down from it’s peak by seemingly useless outro. Perhaps as an album closer I could understand, as it would serve almost perfectly as a parallel to “Intro,” but with the real closer “The Burn” immediately after, it’s hard to understand the placement. My other major quibble with ‘A Promise to Burn’ is the song “Back To Go Again.” The track is certainly infectious enough to warrant a listen, but it seems to go against the mood of the album. “Back To Go Again” is poppy rock at it’s finest, and while Framing Hanley may have done a bang up job on it, it simply feels out of place on the disc.

That’s as far as my nitpicking goes however. My apology goes out to “Wake Up,” “WarZone,” “Fool With Dreams,” “Livin’ So Divine,” and “You,” because I feel nearly every song on this album deserves to be mentioned and praised. ‘A Promise to Burn’ is Framing Hanley’s potential being reached. It is a disc that is ambitious, does not shy away from variety, and has all of the earmarks of an album that will still be remembered a year from now, if not longer. I can’t begin to say enough good things about ‘A Promise to Burn’, but I will end where I began. This album is, quite simply, amazing.
